Looking beyond the event horizon
First, I totally agree that the “current system for control
over user data promotes the social web as a space for commercial activity, but
it does not harness the power of user data for intellectual, creative, or civic
purposes.” (Reyman 2013) I am hopeful that a new value system will be realized
within the near future. One that considers all the aspects of what it means to be
alive and on the planet. Because it’s my experience, that makes it a story best
told by me. But because it’s a shared experience I should be careful not to mess
it up for everyone else.
Let’s talk about the game for just a moment. We all have to
play it, so it does us no good to ignore it. I love to ask “why?” Why do I do the
things I do? Mainly it’s to understand and make things work more efficiently. A
lot of what think about is user experience. How can I make this experience
better and more impactful for the user? However, as realized in the article Learning about evaluation and assessment: teacher’s
use of folksonomies and ontologiesin an online narrative environment, sometimes
that all gets lost in the thick of things. As pointed out, “the paradigm inevitably tends
to exclude the basis of possible users, not only in the creation process, but
also in the revision, modification, and inclusion of new concepts that are just
as important, thus consolidating a centralistic and bureaucratic vision, which
can inhibit the development of knowledge and learning.” (Petrucco 2011) What
can I do to give the user a voice at the table?
Finally, the Social Script Theory “human being theory” is human
behavior categorized into scripts. Behaving like a function in response to a
program action. Said another way, actions based on characteristics and
personality traits of humans with responses to behavior that are retrieved to
match the stimulus. No matter how it’s said, it’s just nuts. Que the stock response
for this situation, my robot friend. The real possibilities for artificial intelligence,
the need to rethink the concept of self, and the desire to redefine my current environment
is a must. Am I ready for this?
In response to harnessing the power of data, yes, I believe that the online community can provide open data to make experiences better. There are a few folks out there that have managed to plug open data into solving real problems (civic participation and disaster responses are a couple I can think of off the bat) and not just for the purpose marketing and calculating ROI.
